Olinda
St Andrew's is committed to supporting the work of the South American Mission Society among the poor in the city of Olinda on the coast of north-east Brazil. Through SAMS we are supporting the work of SAMS Mission Partners, Rev Ian and Rev Simea Meldrum, who run the Living Waters Church.
The Living Waters Church was built after the Church revealed that poverty-stricken people living and working (recycling waste) on Olinda's rubbish tip were eating human flesh from a nearby hospital. The scandal, and pressure from the Church and others, led to local government moving people off the tip and providing land and building materials to build new homes on a site named Unity Village. Living Waters Mission Church Centre was built in the new village to meet the practical and spiritual needs of local people, many of whom still work on the tip.
The Meldrums also run My Father’s House in the centre of Olinda. This provides a home for a small number of children (mainly ex street kids) where they can be helped to overcome their problems and eventually return to their families where this is possible.
Please remember the work of Living Waters Church and My Father’s House in your prayers
